Decolonize Groningen presents: The Uprising – a Film by Pravini

On the 30th of October 2019 Decolonize Groningen organized its first event: a screening + Q&A of The Uprising. Produced by the Hindostani singer/songwriter and decolonial activist Pravini Baboeram, this documentary narrates the struggle against the legacy of colonialism – racism – in Europe from a decolonial perspective. With a focus on the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction (BDS) movement against the Apartheid State of Israel, the anti-Black Pete movement in the Netherlands, and the struggle around the colonial violence perpetrated by the Netherlands during the Indonesian war of Independence (1945-1949), The Uprising shows via thorough decolonial analysis and nine – both musically and lyrically – powerful tracks how these different struggles are in fact interconnected.

An audience of around 60 people was present to watch The Uprising and to listen to the helpful insights generated by the Q&A between dr. Anjana Singh, historian of South-Asian and Global History of the early modern period at the University of Groningen, Pravini herself and the audience. With such a great turn-up, consisting of a diverse group of people with a high level of engagement, an equally engaged moderator – with whom the Q&A would not have been this fruitful – and the presence of the producer of the The Uprising, we could proudly conclude that the first event of Decolonize Groningen was a success! Thanks to everybody who was part of it.
